SIOUX CITY -- Janet M. Girard, 69, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at a local nursing home from leukemia.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, S.D., with the Rev. David Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Janet was born July 13, 1939, in Wisner, Neb., to Robert and Mary (Conley) Kleber. As a child, she moved with her family to Jefferson, S.D., where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Jefferson High School.
She married Harold D. Girard on June 28, 1958, in Jefferson. After their marriage, they moved to San Diego, Calif. This is where her husband was stationed in the service. In 1961, they moved back to the Siouxland area, where she had resided since. She was employed as a telephone operator and later as a temporary seamstress at J.C. Penney's, Rudolph's, Sadoff's, Willigies and Morey & Raymond's.
She was of the Catholic faith. She enjoyed sewing, bingo, baby-sitting, taking care of her grandchildren, gardening and listening to Irish music.
Survivors include two sons, Brad Girard of North Sioux City and Bryan and Teena Girard of San Diego, Calif.; three daughters, Therese Girard of Sioux City, Kim and John Morris of Sioux City and Michelle and David Hopkins of Lemon Grove, Calif.; 23 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three sisters, Donni LaFleur of Alton, Iowa, Elizabeth Ford of Sioux City and Dianne and Bob Raynor of Savannah, Georgia; a brother, Mike and Nancy Kleber of Fullerton, California; two nephews, Bart Kleber and his fiancee, Vicki Harrison, and Tom and Sarah Kleber, all of Sioux City; and a niece, Pamela and Miguel Arce of Tulsa, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a granddaughter, Joanna Morris; four brothers, Joseph, Robert "Bob," Gene and David Kleber; and a sister, Roma Callahan.
