Janette Janis Forney, 78, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Lutheran Church, 700 South Martha St., in Sioux City. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made to the family at

Jan was born on Nov. 12, 1938, in Ida Grove, Iowa, to Elmer and Irma (Wetzstein) Warriner. She grew up in Schaller, Iowa and graduated from Schaller High School in 1956. Jan moved to Sioux City and worked as a nurse's aide at the Lutheran Hospital for six years.
She married Jack Forney on June 2, 1963 at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. The couple had four children, JoAnn, Jeffrey, Jason and Justin. Jack passed away on Oct. 31, 2012. Jan moved to Sunrise Retirement Community in 2012 and was very active there.
Jan worked as a nurse's aide for six years, as a medical assistant for two years, a cashier for National Foods for three years, and provided daycare in her home for 10 years. Jan then worked at Mercy Medical Center for 20 years as an anesthesia tech and later as a surgical waiting room hostess, retiring in 1998. After her retirement, she was the food service coordinator at Morningside Lutheran Church for six years until her health declined.
Her hobbies included sewing, cross stitch, crocheting, bowling, cooking and baking. She enjoyed her pet cats and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Jan was a long time member of Morningside Lutheran Church and a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are daughter, JoAnn (Curt) Rosenbaum of Watertown, S.D.; three sons, Jeffrey Forney of Sioux City, Jason (Beth) Forney of Jefferson, S.D., and Justin Forney of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Joshua and Rachel Rosenbaum; a brother in-law, Jim (Jeanine) Forney of Polk City, Iowa; nephew, Duane Warriner of Schaller; niece, Linda Westeen and her friend, Randy Collum of Grinnell, Iowa; nephews, Todd (Maureen) Forney of Powell, Ohio, Craig (Barb) Forney of Ames, Iowa, John (Denise) Forney of West Des Moines, and their mother, Eileen Hohenstein of Des Moines; along with several grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by husband, Jack; her parents; and her brother and sister-in-law.
