SERGEANT BLUFF -- Jan Secoske, 85, a resident of Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff passed away peacefully at 7 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, following successive strokes.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today in Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta, Iowa. A celebration of her life will precede the interment. Cremation will be prior to the graveside services. A lunch will follow the service for those wishing to attend. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Janette Maxine "Jan" Eaton was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Sac City, Iowa, the youngest of four girls born to Clark Talbot and Cora Louise (Armstrong) Eaton. She grew up in the Sac City area, having moved many times, but remained to finish school.
She married O.S. "Lindy" Lindquist of Alta, Iowa, on Aug. 31, 1941, in Ponca, Neb. They moved to many places over the years, but returned to Alta, where all four children were born. In 1953, they moved to Sioux City, where she worked at Johnson Biscuit Co., before relocating to Verona, Mo., in 1968. Upon returning to Iowa the following year, they rented a farm home south of Cushing, Iowa, for one year before settling in Correctionville, Iowa, where the children finished school. She operated a restaurant for a couple of years before going back to Interbake Foods (old Johnson Biscuit) Co. Lindy suffered a stroke in 1973, and soon after they moved to Sioux City. Later, he was placed in the Correctionville Nursing Home, where he resided until his death at the age of 69.
She married John W. Secoske on Dec. 19, 1983, in Dakota City. They lived in Sioux City until retiring to Yetter, Iowa. They relocated to Apache Junction, Ariz., in 1989,, because of John's health. John died in October 2001, at the age of 73. She returned to Iowa in November 2002, choosing the Moville Senior Center Housing. This was close to her Sioux City friends from work and she enjoyed the many new friends at the housing apartments. She had a bad stroke in June 2007, eventually forcing her to the care center facility. Most of her final three years were spent in the hospital and under nursing supervision. Her health deteriorating fast, she finally succumbed to the shutdown of her bodily functions.
She is survived by her four children, Leonard (Lynn) Lindquist of Rockton, Ill., Tyrone (Kay) Lindquist of Rockford, Ill., Talbot (Loretta) Lindquist of Russellville, Ala., and Anita (Dan) Williams of North Port, Fla.; two stepchildren, Kenneth (Eva) Secoske of Sioux City and Cherlyn (Clayton) Ericson of North Sioux City; a sister, Mary Peddicord of Sumner, Wash.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; seven great-stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two sisters, Dorothy Varlamos of Omaha, and Evelyn Eastridge of Lakeside, Ore.; and a grandson, Len Lindquist Jr. of Rockton, Ill.
She is now in heaven with her family, but we will miss her.
