Janina "Nina" Peters, 90, of Moville died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at her residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 4 p.m., the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Janina was born on May 29, 1923, in Lodz, Poland, the daughter of Vincent and Helen Malkowska. She was forced out of Poland to Germany to work in the war factories under Hitler's regime. After Germany was liberated, she met her future husband, Gene Peters, who was an American soldier.
They were united in marriage on Feb. 5, 1946, in Heidelberg, Germany. They made their home in Moville. Nina worked at several Siouxland packing plants over the years, retiring in the late 1970s. Gene died on July 2, 1974.
Nina was a devout Catholic. Her faith and family were her life. She was a very active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She enjoyed baking for her family and friends.
Survivors include her sons, Ted and Patti Peters of Moville, and Gus and Karen Peters of Sioux City; a daughter, Janine Ploen of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Todd Peters, Holli and T. Countryman, Candi Peters and Chantry Peters; eight great-grandchildren, Keaton, Kennedy, Kennison, Kelsey, Teddy, Tevin, Kealey and Kenden; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene; a grandson, Shane Peters; a great-granddaughter, Kali; and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
