Jeannette Joanna (Vander Haar) was born on May 15, 1918, in Alton, Iowa, the first born of Henry and Trina (Van Zyl) Vander Haar. Her parents moved to Long Beach, Calif., when she was 11 years old. In 1935, she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach.
Returning to Iowa, she lived with her Aunt Hattie in Le Mars, Iowa, where she met Earl Eichhorn. They were married on June 17, 1939, in Moville. After the birth of their first son, LaVern, they moved to Long Beach, where Laurin, their second son, was born. They returned to the Correctionville, Moville, and Kingsley, Iowa, areas to begin farming. She was a busy farm wife when twins, Darrell and Darlene, were born. After moving to various farms, they moved into Leeds in 1959. Being an excellent cook, she was employed at Brown's Cafe in Leeds, before working at Brothers Box Company. After she retired in 1980, they moved to an acreage in Correctionville, where she used her cooking expertise to volunteer at the Senior Center. After Earl's death in 1994, she later moved to an apartment in Moville in 2005.
Besides vegetable and flower gardening, her hands were always busy with a project, be it knitting, making an afghan and quilt for each grandchild and baby afghan for each great-grandchild or cross stitch embroidery and plastic mesh craft projects. She was a super seamstress and efficient organizer. Until April, she had been crocheting baby caps for years for St Luke's Nursery in Sioux City, totaling more than 2,000 baby caps.
Faithfulness in serving each church she attended, she has taught Sunday School, and had been a Women's Ministry officer (S.I.S. at Moville Evangelical Church). She loved music and was a wonderful example of a Christian woman to all who knew her. Prayer for others and learning God's word were high priorities to her. Her love for missions was a strong passion. A trip to visit their missionary son, Darrell and his family, missionaries in Namibia, Africa, was a great adventure. Being campers all of their marriage, they enjoyed their trips south to Texas and Arizona for the winters until their health interfered.
Family left to carry on her legacy are her children, Laurin (Esther) Eichhorn of Sioux City, Rev. Darrell (Jeanne) Eichhorn of Spencer, Iowa, and Darlene (Gerald) Kaiser of Sedgwick, Colo. her eight grandchildren, Cheryl (Dan) Kruger, Bryan (Teresa) Eichhorn, Kevin Eichhorn, Kristin Slack, Kraig (Amanda) Eichhorn, Kert (Rachael) Eichhorn, Angi (Stacy) Johnson, and Tami (Andrew II) Anderson; 19 (soon to be 20) great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Hernandez of Long Beach; brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Ada Eichhorn of Correctionville; several nieces; and a nephew.
Those who have preceded her in death include her parents; her husband, Earl; her son, LaVern; her sister, Joanna (Carl) Nelson; her brother-in-law, Sam Hernandez.
Jeannette's request that memorials be given to The Gideon's Bible International.
