Jeanette "Jean" Leone (Dawson) Lewis of Sioux City died Sunday, June 21, 2015, at her daughter's home in Sioux City, following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Family Worship Center, with the Rev. Bill Yanney officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 4 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Jean was born on Aug. 6, 1933, to John "Jack" Isaac Dawson and Grace Ellen (Pfund) Dawson, in Wayne, Neb. Jean, and her twin sister, Janet Lee (Dawson) Fisher, attended Wayne Prep, graduating in 1951.
Jean met her husband, Lyle Dick Lewis, coming home from a post-graduation trip to California. They were married on Dec. 4, 1951, in Worthington, Minn. Throughout their 54 years of marriage, Lyle and Jean moved several times, settling in Oto, Iowa, in 1970, then finally, moving to Sioux City in 1993.
Jean was a beloved and active member of Family Worship Center in Sioux City. Jean enjoyed sewing, gardening, yard work, knitting, crocheting and baking. In 2009, Jean received the Boys and Girls Home and Family Services Jeff Dible Volunteer of the Year Award for making quilts for their shelter's residence. Jean made many mittens, slippers, shawls, lap warmers, and quilts for area nursing homes, shelters and church benevolent groups. She volunteered for four years as cook at PeaceMakers Academy, a private Christian school in Sioux City, where the children and staff alike enjoyed tasty baked treats nearly every day.
Six children were born to Lyle and Jean, Connie Jean Swearingen (Boyd) of Smithland, Iowa, Lyle Howard Lewis (Janis) of Jacksonville, Fla., Angela Marlene Schroeder (LeRoy) of Sioux City, Jeffrey Wayne Lewis (Chris) of Austin, Texas, Timothy John Lewis (Errin) of Kingsley, Iowa, and Stacy Lynnette Payne (Donald), of Hornick, Iowa. In addition to her children, Jean is survived by two sisters, Mildred Titchemeyer of Arizona, and June Campbell of Kearney, Neb.; one brother, John Dawson of Thornton, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle in 2005; her parents; siblings, Faye, Eddie, Milton, and Janet; and grandson, Benjamin David Lewis and Jerry LeRoy Swearingen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Family Worship Center.
