Jerome P. Rubis, 71, of Hinton passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. David Hemann officiating. Burial will be in North Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Spencer, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Cremation rites have been accorded.
Jerome Paul Rubis was born on Jan. 30, 1943, in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Frank and Violet (Ward) Rubis. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School through eighth grade then graduated from Spencer High School in 1961. Jerome attended college in Brookings, S.D., for two years then transferred to Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., graduating in 1966 with a BA degree in industrial arts in education. Jerome taught industrial arts at East High in Sioux City for 37 years, while also obtaining his master’s degree plus 30 hours also from Wayne State College.
Jerome was united in marriage to Mary Jo Severson on Nov. 28, 1964. They lived in Sioux City until 1976, when they bought an acreage south of Hinton where he also enjoyed farming and mechanic hobbies. Jerome enjoyed helping his students with their different projects, going to county fairs and watching the tractor pulls.
He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Mary Jo of Hinton; a daughter, Therese (Jeff) Kay of Holstein, Iowa; two sons, Paul Rubis of Le Mars, Iowa, and Brian Rubis and his fiancee, Stacy Harms and her three children, Hailey, Brandon and Aiden of Le Mars; two brothers, Francis Rubis of Great Falls, Mont., and Thomas Rubis of Streetsboro, Ohio; and two brothers-in-law, Donald Severson of Madison, Wis., and David Severson of Spencer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Connie Severson.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made in his name to Hospice of Siouxland.
