Jerry Chih Chen, 75, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Indian Hills Care Center following a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Jerry was born May 24, 1933, in Canton, China, the son of Pao-Chang Chen and Mei June Yen. He moved to Taiwan and joined the Army when he was 16 years of age. He received his education degree in Taiwan. He then received a full tuition scholarship to the University of Southern Illinois, where he earned his master's degree.
He moved back to Taiwan, where he met and married Catherine Shiao. Jerry and Catherine started their new life together in Red Oak, Iowa, and then moved to Missouri. Jerry was a full-time teacher and Chinese restaurant owner for Chen's Cove.
Jerry and Catherine then decided to move to Sioux City. Jerry taught elementary special education for the Sioux City Community School District for more than 20 years. He also taught Chinese cooking classes at Western Iowa Tech.
Jerry was a friendly and outgoing person. He always had a smile on his face and loved talking to people. He enjoyed watching sports, exercising and, of course, cooking. His family loved him dearly, and he was a source of inspiration to them.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Chen of Sioux City; and two daughters, Lisa Leliveld and her husband, Thomas, and Lilly Chen, a student at the University of Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
