Jerry E. Goertz, 62, of Sioux City died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael J. Erpelding of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, South Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Jerry was born March 5, 1946, in Sioux City, the son of Howard "Jeff" and Catherine M. (Hogan) Goertz. He attended New Hope School in Sioux City. He had lived in Sioux City most of his life. He was employed with New Perspective (W.A.C.O.) for close to 40 years, where he was a day worker, ran the bailer and made fishing lures.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed his family, doing jigsaw puzzles and taking trips with his family. He enjoyed watching the neighborhood from his front porch. He also liked to go camping and fishing. He belonged to the Circle and Swing Square Dance Club. He also collected Mickey Mouse collectables. He enjoyed gardening and watching his cherry tomatoes ripen. He liked to watch Gun Smoke and other western classics, listening to Johnny Cash and song birds. He enjoyed playing bingo, video games, bowling and cards. He also liked going to the Winnebago Powwow celebration and to Winna-Vegas and the boat.
Survivors include his mother, Catherine Goertz of Sioux City; three brothers and their wives, James and Cheri Goertz of Hillsboro, N.D., Tim and Theresa Goertz of Hornick, Iowa, and Keith and Nadine Goertz of Sioux City; four sisters and husbands, Lois Daniels of South Sioux City, Cathie and Denny Carlson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Cindy and Troy Ackerman of Sioux Falls and Rita and Brian Blanchard of Fremont, Neb.; and several nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jeff Goertz; two brothers, Joe and Tony Goertz; two sisters, Julie and Jeanne Goertz; a nephew, Chuck Levine; a grandniece, Hannah Carlson; his maternal grandparents, Joe and Rose Hogan; and his paternal grandparents, Ernest and Ruth Goertz.
Pallbearers will be Jim, Tim and Keith Goertz, Dan Carlson, Brandon Goertz, Jeff Levine and Adam King.
