Joan Gedwillo, 94 years old, passed away, August 14, 2022. The funeral service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, Sioux City, IA on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 1:00 PM preceded with visitation at 11:30 AM. Pastors John Christianson and Jill Clem will officiate. Arrangements are with the Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.

She was born Dorothy Joan, the second child and second daughter of Clyde W. and Norma M. (Brian) Means on April 27, 1928, in Wichita, KS. Joan grew up on the family farm in rural Derby, KS. The one room country schoolhouse she attended was Carlton Grade School, grades 1-8, Sedgwick County, KS. It was located on a corner plot of land on their farm. She graduated from Derby High School in the spring of 1946. Later that same year, she traveled to Sioux City, IA to visit relatives. It was at this time she met her future husband, Stan.

Stanley C. Gedwillo and Joan Means were united in marriage at the Derby Presbyterian Church in Derby, KS on June 17, 1947. They resided in Sioux City, IA their entire married life. They were blessed with two daughters and a son: Loretta, Barbara and James.

Joan was employed at the Armour packing house and various grocery stores. She retired in 1993 from the Hy-Vee grocery store at the Southern Hills Mall.

Joan was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She served the church in multiple capacities for more than 50 years. She had many interests. Her needle work was exquisite. She was an avid reader; she documented her life in a collection of several volumes. She volunteered her time in organizations and activities that served with purpose Church of All Nations, Grace United Methodist Church, Untied Methodist Women, Goodwill Auxiliary and voting precinct representative. Her personal greeting card ministry touched many lives. In every endeavor, she was admired and honored for her work ethic and dedication to the task at hand.

Joan is survived by her children; Loretta Nash, Barbara and Gary Hulst all of Sioux City and James Gedwillo of Logan, IA; grandchildren, Amanda and Matt Secoske, Miranda Nash, Michael Nash, Sarah and Blake Richards, Nick and Fiona Cline, Nadine Meis, Kimberly and Adam Nordby, Carolyn Theis, Brian and Alicia Gedwillo, Christine and Paul Smith and Laura Gedwillo; great-grandchildren, Emma, Jack, Will, Ada, Tristan, Evelyn, Elizabeth, Remington, Aneissa, Lesane, Talon, Cale, Mikaela, Theo, Anakin, Dean, Staszek, Lincoln, Maple, Bronson, Alivia, Cora, Averi, Broklynn, Brayden, Brynna, Connor, and Amaya; great-great-grandchild, Alessia; siblings, Shirley Shelley of Valley Springs, CA, Judy Franksen of Omaha, NE,and Jack Means of Wichita, KS; and brother-in-law, Dwight Tillotson of Winfield, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan; parents, Clyde and Norma; son-in-law, Jeff Nash; grandsons, Jacob Nash and infant Neil Cline; great-grandson, infant Samuel Nash; sisters, Nadine Tillotson, Lois Rose and Beth Weinert; brothers-in-law, Dean Rose, David Weinert and John Shelley; father and mother-in-law, John and Victoria Gedwillo Postello and Adam Postello; brother and sister-in-laws, John and Gretchen Gedwillo, Tony and Alice Gedwillo and infant Joseph Gedwillo.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA following the service.
