SIOUX CITY -- Joan C. Poppen, 73, of Sioux City joined her heavenly Father and those that went before her on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008. Joan fought a courageous battle with multiple illnesses.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with Pastor John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, with the family present 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

Joan Carol Gebauer was born July 20, 1935, to Ralph and Wilmina (Klienheslink) Gebauer in Alton, Iowa. She graduated from East High School in Sioux City and attended classes at WIT for day-care management. On July 3, 1952, Joan and Duane Poppen were married in Elk Point, S.D.

Joan will be remembered for her love of family and friends and her many children she taught in music and preschool. She was active in gardening, bowling, and in later years, her Bible study group and neighbors.

Joan is survived by her loving husband, Duane of Sioux City; a daughter, Patty and her husband, Jerry Parden of Palm Springs, Calif.; a son, Jon D.H. Poppen of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Megan Poppen; a brother, Ralph and wife, Carol Gebauer of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sisters, Myrna and husband, Verne Weilenga of Orange City, Iowa, and Barb and husband, Jerry Brock of Le Mars; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
