Joan M. Redding, 87, of North Sioux City, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Private family burial will be held at a later date in Columbus, Ohio. Arrangements are under the direction of Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Joan was born on May 8, 1930, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Arthur and Myrtle (Schwartz) Lonergan. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary, Immaculate Conception Academy, Clarke College and Catholic University, where she received her master's degree in library science.
Joan was united in marriage to William J. Redding on May 23, 1959 in Washington, D.C. He preceded her in death, in 1989. They lived in Washington, DC, the east coast, and Columbus, Ohio, before Joan moved to Sioux City in 1996. Joan worked as a librarian for Catholic University and Upper Arlington Public Library before retiring in 1996. After her retirement, she worked at the North Sioux City Library for several years.
Joan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she took care of the funeral luncheons for a number of years. She enjoyed reading and helping children learn to read. Joan was a very generous woman, giving to many charities and the Democratic party.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, Mary Anne (Roger) Redding-Atkins of Boone, N.C., Patricia (Frank) Scanlon of New York, N.Y., Peggy (Paul) Redding-Krzych of Washington, D.C., Arthur (Natasha) Redding of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Joan (Dennis) Redding-Olson of San Antonio, Texas, and William (Jessica) Redding of Columbus, Ohio; sister, Mary Lonergan, McCook Lake, S.D.; and her grandchildren, Gavin Redding and Valentine Scanlon.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Richard Lonergan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Catholic Relief Organization or Food for the Poor.
