JoAnn Deming

JoAnn Deming, 85, of Sioux City died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City.
Abiding by her wishes, private graveside services will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Dan Lozer of Mayflower Congregational Church will officiate. The family will host a time of remembrance from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Mayflower Congregational Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Jo Ann was born on Sept. 20, 1929, in Sioux City, to Howard and Edith (Miller) Deming. She grew up in Sioux City and attended Hopkins Elementary School, West Junior High and graduated from Central High School in June 1947.
She was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Sioux City as an operator. She held various positions in the traffic department, the last being office manager for the Traffic Department at the Sioux City District Office. She later transferred to the Engineering Department as office manager. As the breakup of the phone company continued, she retired on Dec. 25, 1982, after 35 years of service. She then went to work part-time for her credit union now known as Telco Triad for nine years.
She was a member of Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ for 59 years.
Survivors include two nephews, Andrew and his wife, Angela Deming of Martinez, Ga., and Peter Deming of Yankton, S.D.; six nieces, Catherine McClary of Norfolk, Neb., Ellen Buchanan of Blanchard Okla., Judith and her husband, Perry Nelson of Elk Point, S.D., Lori Johnson of Sioux City, Jana and her husband, Doug Niebaum of Sioux City, and Debra Johnson and her friend, Misty Browne of Sioux City; several grandnieces and nephews; a great-grandniece; and several great-grandnephews.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Donald M. Deming and his wife, Betty Mae; her sister, Sharon L. Johnson and her husband, Robert; two nephews, Scott L. Johnson and Robert L. Johnson; a grandnephew, Aaron M. Deming; her beloved pet dog, Baby entered Doggie Heaven on Jan. 26, 2009 at the age of 15 years and 6 months.
