Sioux City - Joanne "Joanie" Bentley, 74, of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her family.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Joanne was born on Nov. 14, 1938, in Sioux City, to Arthur and Elizabeth (Harder) Hills. She graduated from East High School.
She was united in marriage to Terry Bentley on May 11, 1957, in Sioux City. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital, the Sioux City School Lunch Program, and Bishop's. She would socialize with the 1120 girls and would often meet them for lunch. Joanne babysat for many years and was a mother figure to many of the children and families.
She enjoyed antiquing, going to rummage sales, singing, spending time with family, and showing her love through cooking. Joanne also liked collecting quilts and appreciated the art in them. She sewed and shared her knowledge of sewing. She gained a large extended family through the many lives she touched. All of the kids in Riverside knew that they could get an apple from her tree. Joanne always put other people first and knew how to make you feel like the most important person in the world.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, Judy (Pat) Murphy-Bentley of Sioux City, Terri Jo (Todd) Wheelock of Sioux City, and Bradley Bentley of Sioux City; grandchildren, Jessica (Branden) Henneous of Sioux City, Angie Christiansen and fiancee, Travis of Sioux City, and Hannah Wheelock of Sioux City; two great-grandchildren, Austin Hamman and Joel Terry Henneous; brother, Doug (Julie) Hills of Anoka, Minn.; sisters, Shirley LaFave of Mapleton, Iowa, and Evelyn Wilshire of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Terry; son, Robert Tim; daughter, Linda Jean; and sisters, Gladys Richards, Pearl Gould, Esther Smith, and Betty Ferdig.
Memorials may be made to the family.
