Joe "Bula" Schuldt

SIOUX CITY -- Joe "Bula" Schuldt, 89, of Sioux City died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Russell Senstad officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Joe was born Jan. 26, 1920, in Westermarklesdorf, Germany, the son of Joachim and Gertrude (Willer) Schuldt. His parents booked passage to the United States before Gertrude died. Joachim then brought his two children to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island in September 1924. They settled in the Climbing Hill area. Joe attended Rising Sun School and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's in Midway (near Anthon, Iowa).

He married Wilma Mitchell on April 3, 1945. He farmed and worked on other farms in the Climbing Hill area until 1974, when they sold the farm and moved to Sioux City. While in Sioux City, he worked for Sears, Wells Fargo and Aalfs.

He enjoyed being outside, working in the yard and gardening. He never knew a stranger and always had time to visit and reminisce.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Schuldt of Sioux City; his children, James and Sharleen Schuldt of Elk Point, S.D., Carol and Doug Fitchner of North Sioux City, Donne and Marian Schuldt of Sioux City, Robert Schuldt and his significant other, Paula Hendrixson of Peoria, Ariz., and Steven Schuldt of Sioux City; his grandchildren, Michael and Joy Schuldt of Jefferson, S.D., Melissa Schuldt of Superior, Colo., Deana and Derek Heeren of Akron, Iowa, Jeffrey Schuldt of Seattle, Wash., Wade Schuldt, Leigh Schuldt and Mark Fitchner, all of Sioux City and Janette and Mike DeSmet of Iowa City, Iowa; his great-grandchildren, Madalyne, Erin, Taylor, Dakota, Lakin, Zoe, Luke and Katie; a sister, Lisa and Kenneth McGraw of Anthon, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
