John LeRoy Arnold

September 26, 1939 — December 24, 2011

SIOUX CITY -- John Leroy Arnold, 72, a lifelong resident of Sioux City, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
John was born Sept. 26, 1939 in Sioux City, to Clyde and Elsie (Sanders) Arnold. He grew up and attended Sioux City schools, graduating from Central High in 1957. He entered in the U.S. Army in January 1958 and served until September 1960.
After returning to Sioux City, he started part-time with the City of Sioux City Public Works Department. He received his BA degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake in 1968. John then went to work for the city full-time, working his way up to be assistant public works director in 1979. Then on Oct. 31, 1992, John was named the director of public works. He retired in 2000 after 32 years with the city of Sioux City.
John's hobbies included stamp and coin collecting as well as woodworking and genealogy. He was a member of the Sioux City Optimist Club and the Iowa Traffic Control and Safety Association.
Survivors include his brother, Daniel and Glenda Arnold of Johnston, Iowa; a niece, Debbie Mitchell of West Virginia; an aunt, Hadel Whitver of Florida; as well as numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Arnold.
