Elk Point, S.D. | John C. "Jack" McIntosh, 80, of Elk Point passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, surrounded by loved ones after battling a long illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elk Point, with the Rev. David Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in Elk Point Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
John was born on Jan. 11, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the son of Collin and Mary (Smith) McIntosh. He was raised in Virginia City, Nev., and graduated from the Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, Calif. He worked in Reno, Nev., and then joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After the service he joined the Dominican Brotherhood for a year and a half. After he left the Brotherhood, he moved to San Francisco and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. He also attended San Francisco State University.
While in San Francisco, he met Alvera Rose Lux and they were married on Aug. 24, 1963, in San Francisco. After school the family moved to Elk Point, where John taught school for a short while. He then worked at the ASCS office in Elk Point from 1977 until he retired in 1994.
John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elk Point and the Elk Point VFW. Jack was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and was an avid reader. He never minded sharing his opinion on anything with anyone willing to listen.
He is survived by his wife, Rose of Elk Point; his children, Colin and Wendy McIntosh of Elk Point, and stepchildren, Chastity McGrew, Zach McGrew, and Zach's daughter, Emma Miller, Michelle McIntosh of Rapid City, S.D., Dominic and Teresa McIntosh of Round Rock, Texas, and their children, Alley McIntosh, and stepchildren, Kristen and Katie Handy, Angela and Paul Saffert of St. Louis Park, Minn., and their children, Alex and Isabelle; and a sister, Marie Horsely of Fallon, Nev.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy, Joseph David; two sisters, Marge Huber and Mary Frances; and his brother, Dick.
