John Henry Knight

December 27, 1926 — February 17, 2009

SIOUX CITY -- John Henry Knight, a loving father, grandfather and friend, 82, former Sioux City resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, in Knoxville, Tenn., after a short illness.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Valerie Heller officiating. Burial of the ashes will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service, at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

John was born on Dec. 27, 1926, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Henry and Rose (Dillion) Knight. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from East High School and attended Morningside College.

On Nov. 30, 1957, he married Sally "Joan" Kuhler in Sioux City. John worked for the Soil Conservation Service from 1948 until 1985. After retiring from the SCS, he went to work for Siouxland Engineering Associates until he again retired in 1996.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City, a member of Bearden United Methodist Church of Knoxville, was a proud and dedicated member of Morningside Masonic Lodge 615, where he was a past master. He was a member of the Morningside Order of Eastern Star 502, where he was a past worthy patron, and a member of the Scottish and York Rites and the Abu Bekr Shrine.

He loved to go camping with friends, coaching youth baseball, finding reasons to smile and laugh, make other laugh as well and being kind to everyone he met.

John is survived by two sons and their wives, Ken and Tammy of Knoxville, Tenn., and Keith and Kathy of Orange, Calif.; a daughter, Jean Hansen of Knoxville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Casondra, Michael, Brian, Kevin, Virginia "Ginny" and Cody; and a brother-in-law, James Kuhler and wife, Fely of Zion, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his sister, who died in infancy; parents; and his wife, Sally "Joan" Knight. She died on Sept. 4, 1997, in Sioux City.
