Father John Lynch

JACKSON, Neb. -- The Rev. John Lynch S.J., 78, Wauwatosa, Wis., formerly of Jackson, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, of brain cancer at the St. Camillus Jesuit Community.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Church in Jackson. The Rev. Paul Albenesius will officiate. Burial of the ashes will be in St. John Cemetery, Jackson. Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home of Sioux City is handling the arrangements.

The Rev. Lynch was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Sioux City, the son of John M. "Doc" and Mary Mildred (Ryan) Lynch. Rev. John attended Jackson Pubic Schools, Trinity High School, Bishop Heelan High School, and Creighton University. Rev. John entered the Society of Jesus in 1954. He earned licentiate of sacred theology, a master's degree in education and a doctorate in philosophy from St. Louis University. Rev. John was ordained at St. John Church in Omaha in 1966. He served as pastor there from 1972 to 1985 and again in mid 1990s. He was also a teacher and administrator at Creighton University.

Rev. John was very active in his ministry up until his death. Rev. Lynch was a man, gentle in his manner and many people will remember his deep faith in God. He had a real gift of caring and really listened to what people's needs were.

His survivors include four sisters, Catherine Hohnstein and Cecelia (Earl) Bogard, both of Ponca, Neb., Patricia (Ed) Mari and Mildred (Joe) Gill, both of Jackson; three brothers, James (Marlene) of Omaha, Thomas (Jeanne) of Jackson, and Gene (Ottie) of Fruitvale, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
