John Michael "Mick" Alvarez

SIOUX CITY -- John M. "Mick" Alvarez, 68, of Sioux City died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Dan Doran, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Mick was born on Sept. 18, 1940, in Sioux City, son of John L. and Glendora (Spillman) Alvarez. He graduated from East High School in 1959. He married Marvena B. Petzoldt on Aug. 1, 1964, in Sioux City. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City.

Mick was employed in the material and handling department as a fork lift operator at IBP and Tyson Foods for 30 years. He retired in 2004.

He was a member of First Evangelical Free Church. Mick was an all-around handy man. He was an avid sports fan, especially for football and baseball. He was a big University of Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed fishing at Lake Okoboji as well as Christian and country music. Mick's pride and joy was working on his 1978 Chevy pick-up truck. He also loved to work in his garden growing all sorts of vegetables.

Survivors include his wife, Marvena of Sioux City; a son, Ken L. Alvarez of Sioux City; a daughter, Brenda A. Alvarez of Sioux City; three brothers, Gary Alvarez of Kansas City, Mo., Terry Alvarez and his friend, LuAnne Rossi, both of Butler, Pa., and James Alvarez and his wife, Lynda of Gretna, Neb.; a sister and her husband, Patricia and Jim Vaughn of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two nephews, Tony Alvarez and Michael Irwin.

Pallbearers will be Ryan, Dwight and Don Petzoldt, Tim Alvarez, Don Schincke and Jim Chrisman.
