John Phillip Nelson, 60, of Sioux City, died Sunday, March 19, 2017, after a brief illness surrounded by friends and family.
A celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller officiating. John was born on Oct. 26, 1956, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Richard F. and Patricia (Collins) Nelson. He grew up in Clinton, Iowa, and attended Clinton Public Schools. He moved to Sioux City in 1978. He was a machine operator and welder for Saber Communications.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing cards, working on cars, watching science fiction movies and shows, the Green Bay Packers and the Iowa Hawkeyes. John loved to spend time with his family, especially his nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his father, Richard Nelson of Clinton; and three sisters, Sharon (Tom) Hutcheson of Sioux City, Penny (Richard) Abbott of Sioux City and Brenda Nelson of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dustin John Nelson; mother, Patricia Nelson; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
