John Richard Pettit, 91, a lifelong resident of Sioux City, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, after a brief illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Roger Graff officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1973. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
John was born on Jan. 16, 1916, to Frank and Daisy Pettit. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Gunner's Mate during World War II. He worked for Swift Packing for 35 years. After his retirement in 1971, he dedicated 10 years of his retirement years driving a school bus for the Sioux City Public School System.
John married his high school sweetheart, Naomi, in 1940. Together, they devoted their lives to family, church and community. As one of the charter members of the Morningside Presbyterian Church, John served as an elder, a choir member, a deacon and a coach of the church's boys basketball team; and most recently, as an usher. Some of his happiest moments were spent in the stands at East High football and basketball games as well as track meets. He was an avid golfer, who also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Naomi; his three children, Gary Pettit and his wife, Debby of Tampa, Fla., Lynn Pettit Olson and her husband, Ben of Concord, Calif., and Dean Pettit of Grundy Center, Iowa; grandchildren, John Pettit, Kari Marsland-Pettit, Alana Olison, Nicole Pettit, Deena Pettit, Amy Pettit, Krista Pettit; five great-granddaughters; and a sister, Annis Cooke of Spokane, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alicia; and a brother, Al.
