John Steven Renner

SIOUX CITY -- John S. Renner, 90, of Sioux City died at his home early Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Russell Senstad and David Zirpel officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
John was born April 9, 1920, in Sioux City, the son of Joseph and Maude (Gregory) Renner. He attended Sioux City Public Schools and graduated from Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Germany.
On June 16, 1939, he married Betty Jean Wright in Dakota City. Betty died on Jan. 10, 1985 in Sioux City. He then married Virginia (Fallon) Prince on Feb. 18, 1989, in Sioux City.
He worked for the railroad for five years, Motor Express Rentals for a few years, then for Sioux Transportation for many years until his retirement in 1982.
He was a retired member of the Teamster Union 383. He and Betty were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Following his marriage to Virginia, he attended and later became a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Gary (Dorothy) Renner of Gering, Neb., and Robert (Chris) Prince of Sioux City; daughters, Gayle (Marlin) Jeffers of Omaha, Connie (Bob) Houlihan and Amy (Mike) McManamy, both of Sioux City; and a son-in-law, David Miller of Sioux City. He was blessed with 34 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; a daughter, Jill Miller; sons, John Renner II and William C. Prince; and three brothers, Vernon, Hubert and Joseph.
The family suggests memorials to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City or Hospice of Siouxland.
