John G. Ryan, 96, of Jackson, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, at his nephew's residence in Jackson.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, with the Rev. John J. Lynch, S.J., his nephew, officiating. Co-celebrants will be the Rev. Paul M. Albenesius, pastor, the Rev. Merlin J. Schrad and the Rev. Raymond Nedimyer, T.O.R. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Harty-McNalley Post 175. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel in Sioux City.
John was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Jackson, the son of John and Bea (McBride) Ryan. He was raised in Jackson and graduated from St. Catherine's Academy.
He married Rose V. Frink at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City on Aug. 19, 1940. Rose died July 22, 2004 in Sioux City. He worked in the Ryan General Store, that was established in 1896. He then entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge, the couple moved back to Jackson to operate the general store from 1946 until 1956, when he sold the store and moved back to Sioux City. He owned and operated the Ryan Wholesale Distributors and Men's Clothing Store until 1976, when he retired. He moved back to Jackson in 2005 to live with his nephew, Tom Lynch and his wife, Jeanne.
He was a former member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He and Rose enjoyed many years of traveling around the country visiting family and friends. They especially enjoyed going to the horse races, dog races and visiting different casinos. They belonged to the St. Catherine's Alumni Association for 36 years. They were faithful participants at their meetings and he was always willing to tell the members a few stories or a joke or two. He was a former member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus Ephipany Council 743. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion Harty-McNalley Post 175.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Dolores Frink of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, James Frink of Sioux City; and 13 nieces and nephews, Catherine Hohenstein, the Rev. John Lynch, S.J., Patricia Mari, Gene Lynch, Jim Lynch, Tom Lynch, Millie Gill, Cedie Bogard, Scott Frink, Randy Frink, Mardi Hendrich, Connie Frink and Jay Frink.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his life long companion and best friend, Rose; two sisters, Ruth Ryan and Mildred Lynch; a niece, Kerry Frink; and a nephew, Steven Frink.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Tom, Jim and Gene Lynch, Scott Frink, Ed Mari and Joe Gill.
Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Cemetery perpetual care fund or Hospice of Siouxland.
