Jonita 'Joni' Woodbridge Jacobsen

Jonita "Joni" Kay Woodbridge Jacobsen, 58, of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at a Sioux City hospital. Immediate family was at her side when Joni passed away, following a four-year struggle with breast cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www.christysmith.com .
Joni was born in 1956 in Sioux City, to Dr. J.P. and Lorna Woodbridge of Pierson, Iowa. After graduating from Kingsley-Pierson High School in 1974, Joni went to Iowa State University in Ames. She obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1980.
After graduation, she worked in Illinois for several years. She moved to Sioux City in 1988. Joni was the veterinarian at Elk Creek Animal Hospital for 24 years.
Joni and Alan Jacobsen were married in 1981. They were the parents of three sons, John, Aaron and Levi Jacobson. John lives and works in Chicago. Aaron and Levi live at home and work in Sioux City.
Joni was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and served on a variety of committees in the past 24 years. She actively participated in Boy Scouts in various leadership positions from 1995 until the present, receiving the District Award of Merit. She was a 4-H leader for several years, and served as the veterinarian for the Woodbury County Fair pet show and cat show. She was an active member of the Interstate Veterinary Medical Association, serving in leadership positions.
Survivors include her husband, Alan Jacobsen; three sons; a brother, Rick (Debbie) Woodbridge; two sisters, Glenda (Gene) Hill, and Janie (Ed) Johlman; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Joni was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lorna Woodbridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, the Iowa 4-H Foundation or June Nylen Cancer Center.
