Dr. Joseph Linus Wiedemeier, 88, of Sioux City died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at his home.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Merlin Schrad will officiate. Burial of the ashes will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Joseph was born on June 10, 1925, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Dr. Linus Joseph and Rose Marie (Rinehart) Wiedemeier. He was raised in Carroll and graduated from Carroll High School. He attended Creighton University and graduated from Creighton Medical School in Omaha.
Joseph married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Tangney, on Dec. 28, 1946, in Omaha. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1950. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served in a M.A.S.H. Unit in Korea. After the service, he returned to Sioux City where he had his medical practice for more than 40 years. He retired in 1997.
Dr. Wiedemeier was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, he had served as president at Mercy Medical Center and was a member of American Medical Association and Sioux City Medical Association. He enjoyed golfing, boating, playing cards with his buddies and was a longtime member of the Sioux City Country Club. Practicing medicine and his family were the most important things in his life.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Sioux City; his children, Carol (Bruce) Siegrist of Englewood, Colo., Mary Jo (Mike) Dahir of Omaha, Gina (Don) Corry of Kanab, Utah, Thad (Lori) Wiedemeier of Spirit Lake, Iowa, John (Vic) Wiedemeier of Polk City, Iowa, Beth (Chris) Hougen of Eau Claire, Wis., and Dan (Ruth) Wiedemeier of Ames, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Gladys Hannasch of St. Louis, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Joseph L. Jr.; two grandchildren, Valerie and Lamar; his brother, Merle Wiedemeier.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to Hospice of Siouxland or Blessed Sacrament School Tuition Fund.
