Moville, Iowa - Joy D. Harmes, 85, of Moville passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Moville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery in Moville. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Joy was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Anne (Foster) Alloway. She grew up in Pierson, Iowa, and graduated from Pierson High School in 1946.
Joy married Gene Harmes on Sept. 19, 1948. Together they made their home in Moville. After their children were raised, Joy worked in retail at Fishgall’s and Younkers, retiring in the early 2000s. Gene died in 1987.
Joy was a member of Moville United Methodist Church, Moville Women’s Club, the Meadows Golf Course, Eastern Star and the Kan Duettes. She enjoyed dancing with her husband, Gene, playing cards in card club and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include a daughter, JoEllen and Phil Nugent of Sioux City; two sons, Danny and Annette Harmes of Moville, and Kirk and Tami Harmes of Phoenix, Ari.; six grandchildren, Tawn Nugent and friend, Jess, Tate Nugent and fiancee, Briana and daughter, Liliana, Nicole and TR Glasgow, Austin Harmes, Kelly and Adam McElrath and Jill Harmes; three great-grandchildren, Addison and Alexa McElrath and Taylor Glasgow; and a sister-in-law, Greta Harmes of Moville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; son, Monty; and great-granddaughter, Kayla.
