Joyce was born on Dec. 16, 1933, in Evanston, Ill., the daughter of George and Marian (Gamble) Mills. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University, where she met her husband, Art Beumler.
They married on Dec. 29, 1956, in Lakewood, Ohio. They made their home and raised their sons in Livonia, Mich., until 1976 when they moved to Sioux City.

She was also active in P.E.O., Alpha Chi Omega, and the Miercoles study group. As a voracious reader who loved sharing her passion for books, Joyce sold them for more than 14 years for Book People and served on the Sioux City Library Board of Trustees. Both she and her late husband were active supporters of public radio.

Heidi Hudnut-Beumler of Nashville, Tenn., Steve and Jean Beumler of Elkhorn, Neb., and John and Allison Beumler of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; eight grandchildren, Julia and Adam, Andrew and Carrie, Kara, Jase, and Lauren, Grace and Sarah; a sister, Jean and Allen Burr of Chicago; and a niece, Katherine Kelsey and Adam Sturbaum of Columbus, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Art.
