SIOUX CITY -- Joyce Eileen Hiser, 84, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Koehler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to

Joyce was born Jan. 2, 1927, in Sioux City, the daughter of Bert and Bertha (Crooks) Maxfield. She was baptized in 1931 at Morningside Presbyterian Church. Joyce was an honor graduate of East High School in 1945. She attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. She graduated from DelMar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1976, while employed at Corpus Christi Army Depot. While there, she was selected for the procurement intern program with the U.S. Army. She was sent to the Armament Munitions and Chemical Command headquarters in Rock Island, Ill., for training in the three-year program. She graduated in 1982 and was promoted to a contract specialist and policy analyst. Joyce retired in January 1989 and returned to Sioux City.
Joyce was married to Louis William "Bill" Hiser Jr. on Dec. 6, 1946, at Morningside Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. They divorced in 1972. Prior to the Army Civilian Service, she was in RE Sales, Urban Renewal Property Acquisition and the first sales manager of the local Hilton Hotel.
Ms. Hiser was a Cub Scout leader, a Red Cross volunteer and a member of LaSertoma. As a teenager, Joyce was a member of the choir at Morningside Presbyterian Church and was a soloist in and around Sioux City in the years that followed. She loved God, her church, golf, cooking, flower arranging and decorating. She also loved to play deuces wild and joker poker. At one time, she was a member of Morningside Country Club and later of the Deer Run Golf Course in Hinton, Iowa.
She is survived by her son, Gevan Maxfield Hiser of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Charleen "Tiny" Maxfield; a niece, Chris Maxfield and family; a nephew, Bryan and Marsha Maxfield and family, all of Bothell, Wash.; and two cousins, Betty and Beverly Maxfield of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents; her beautiful granddaughter, Molly Ann; and a brother, Richard "Dick" Maxfield.
