SIOUX CITY -- Karilyn L. Merchant, 75, of DeMotte, Ind., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, in DeMotte.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 3 to 7 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to

Karilyn was born Nov. 5, 1933, in Orange City, Iowa, to Julius and Frances Marie (VanderStoep) Talsma. She attended public schools in Orange City and Sioux City.
On Feb. 4, 1950, she married James Douglas Merchant. He preceded her in death in September 2007. She was a general and associate manager for J.C. Penney's and retired after a 40-year career.
She was a longtime active member of Mayfair Reformed Church in Lakewood, Calif. After her health began to fail, she enjoyed attending services at Oak Grove Christian Retirement Village and at Community Christian Reformed Church in DeMotte, Ind.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Phillip) Roodzant of DeMotte; a granddaughter, Pamela (Kevin) Uffelman of Acampo, Calif.; a grandson, James (Tawnya) Roodzant of DeMotte; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Jenna and Emma Uffelman, Sam, Jake, Matthew, Molly and Brady Roodzant; a brother, Glenn Talsma of Yankton, S.D.; sisters, Arta (Cordell) Hull of Walnut Creek, Calif., Julia (Everett) Verdoorn of Littleton, Colo., Mary (Clark) Godfrey and Kay (Jim) Godfrey, both of Sioux City; sisters-in-law, Ramona Talsma of Bellflower, Calif., Lynn Merchant of Sioux City, Ernestine Merchant of South Sioux City and Mary (Ron) Harnack of Remsen, Iowa; and brothers-in-law, Eugene (Norma) Merchant of Elk Point, S.D., Kelly (Pam) Merchant of Wichita, Kan., Frank (Rena) Merchant of Omaha, Bob Merchant, John (Elaine) Merchant and Howard Karras, all of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Robert Talsma; and a sister, Janice Fraser.
