Kathleen Mary "Kay" Sorensen (Robinson)

SIOUX CITY -- Kathleen "Kay" Mary Sorensen, 90, of Sioux City died Jan. 19, 2011, at Bickford Cottage Assisted Living.

Private funeral services will be held Monday, with the Rev. Anthony Allard, pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

Kay was born on Feb. 21, 1920, in Sioux City, daughter of James M. and Kathryn E. (Coffield) Robinson. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1938. She then attended the University of Omaha in Omaha, Neb.

She married Carl A. Sorensen on Dec. 19, 1947, in Elk Point, S.D. After their marriage, the family lived in Elk Point for a short time, returning to Sioux City in 1950. Carl died on Dec. 6, 2000, in Sioux City. Kay was employed as a secretary for the Sioux City Public School System for 22 years. She worked at McKinley, Franklin and Hayworth Junior High School.

She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and the women's circle. She was also a member of the Girls of 68 and the Goodwill Auxiliary. She made dolls for the Salvation Army and was a member of the Music Maids Kitchen Band. Kay was a Sioux City Sue.

Survivors include one son and his wife, James and Sandra Sorensen of Omaha; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Ben Steffe of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Jackie Crosbie of Omaha; a grandson, Brent Sorensen of Nags Head, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Sharon Metz.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, James Robinson.
