Kathleen Anna Smith, 92 of Sioux City, Iowa died on Sunday, April 5, 2015, at Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
A Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 11th at the Larkin Chapel of Christy Smith Funeral Homes located at 2320 Outer Drive Sioux City, Iowa, with the Reverend Father Thomas Topf officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, IA.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, April 10th with the family present starting at 6:00 pm, and a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm.

Mrs. Smith was born, August 24, 1922 in Sioux City, Iowa, to Ben and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Topf. She attended St. Patrick’s Academy in Danbury, Iowa, and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1940. She also studied at the National Business Training School in Sioux City, graduating in 1942. She was united in marriage to Howard B. Smith Jr. on January 6, 1943 at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. The couple made Sioux City their home and had three surviving children; Douglas, Mary Kay and Jodee.
Mrs. Smith was an administrative assistant at Verstegen Printing until 1946 when she took a position as an administrative assistant at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (later Marian Health Center), That position would ultimately lead to a life-long professional career in hospital administration. Mrs. Smith, during an era which was often challenging to the advancement of women in executive positions, was eventually promoted to Supervisor of Patient Accounts at Marian Health Center, retiring in 1983 after 37 years. After retiring she worked part time at American Home Health until 1987. She received the Iowa Governor’s Community Volunteer Award, presented to her by Governor Terry E. Branstad in 1994.
Her hobbies included golfing, playing cards especially bridge and five hundred and traveling. Some of her favorite trips were to Europe, Hawaii and Mexico. She especially enjoyed spending time each year at Lake Okoboji with her granddaughters. Kathleen also enjoyed many of the events and activities at the Siouxland Senior Center.
Mrs. Smith volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a home health care volunteer.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Surviving are a son, Douglas (Sigrid) Smith of Stroudsburg, PA, two daughters, Mary Kay Smith (Tom Clark) of Sioux City, IA and Jodee (John) Chambers of Omaha, NE. nine grandchildren; Michelle Smith of Orlando, FL, Claudia (Ryan) Foster of Bloomingburg, NY, Scott (Laura) Chambers of Omaha, NE, Doug (Liz) Chambers of Charlotte, NC, Shiuvaun Reuter of Sioux City, Shannon Schroeder of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Matt Schroeder of Sioux City, Theresa (Cory) Conlon of Sioux City, Rita Schroeder of Sioux City, seventeen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and nine nieces and nephews.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Siena, and three sisters Mary Charlson, Rita Wiedenfield and Helen Long.
