SIOUX CITY -- Kathryn A. Gries, 71, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at her residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jon Pennington officiating. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Fairfield Township Cemetery, Albert City, Iowa. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to

Kathryn was born March 15, 1938, in Laurens, Iowa, the daughter of Nathaniel and Judith (Anderson) Lundquist. She grew up in Laurens and Albert City. She attended school in the area and graduated from Albert City High School in 1956.
On July 28, 1962, at the Albert City Evangelical Free Church, she married Kenneth Gries. After their marriage, they moved to Sioux City, where she had resided ever since. She was employed with Econo-Foods in Sioux City and later at Hy-Vee in South Sioux City, working primarily in the produce area.
She attended Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed flowers, traveling, sightseeing, visiting family, reading, cooking and her pet cat.
Survivors include her husband, Ken of Sioux City; a daughter, Karen Gries of New Bedford, Mass.; a son, Keith and Angie Gries of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five grandchildren, Laticia, Michael, Marco, Madison and Tyler; two sisters, Sharon Hiserote of Sioux City and Phyllis and Richard Pennington of Hinton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
