Kendall R. Bauer

Kendall Robson Bauer, 74, of Sloan, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Sioux City. The Rev. David Miller will officiate. Interment will be in Sloan Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Ken was born on June 30, 1939, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Peter Christ and Fern Elma (Robson) Bauer. He was raised on a farm near Pocahontas, Iowa, and graduated from Pocahontas High School. After high school, he attended Morningside College, Iowa State University, and the School of Mines in Rolla, Mo., where he completed his engineering degree in 1964.
He met his wife, Rose Elaine Lacy, there and they were married on March 19, 1962, in Mount Vernon, Ill. Ken began his engineering career with Moffit Tooling in St. Louis, Mo., working on the tooling to secure the heat shield to the space capsule with the Gemini Space Program. He later worked as an engineer for U.S. Gypsum in Fort Dodge, Iowa, before coming to the Sioux City area and working for Terra Industries for the next 30 years, where he retired in 2000.
He was a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church. He loved working with cars and even raced them, along with motorcycles, in his earlier years.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine; three children, Lori and Randy Swanson of Sloan, Rick of Sloan, and Kerry and Laura of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren, Apollo, Amanda and her fiance, Bobby, Rebekah, Victoria, Taylor, Hannah, and Julia; a great-grandchild, Colin; and his brother, Dallas of La Mesa, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Aleta Campbell; his sisters, Bonnie Demers and Beverly Fernau; and his brothers, Garth, Boyd, and Bruce.
Donations, in place of flowers, may be given to the Lottie Moon Missionary Offering at Southern Hills Baptist Church.
