Smithland, Iowa - Kenneth Everette Scheer, 90, of Smithland died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, in Smithland, surrounded by his loving family.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, at 1801 Morningside Ave. in Sioux City, Iowa. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.christysmith.com .
Kenneth was born June 20, 1923, in Charlotte, Iowa, to Edward and Lillian (Meggers) Scheer. He was raised on the family farm near Goose Lake, Iowa. The family moved from the Clinton, Iowa, area to Siouxland when he was a teenager.
He married Betty J. Olson on Jan. 19, 1946, at Mapleton, Iowa. The couple made their home and farmed near Smithland for 20 years. During that time he also worked for Westendorf Manufacturing as a welding foreman. Betty passed away in October 1969. Kenneth married Karolyn "Kay " Erickson Painter on Dec. 14, 1972, in Sioux City. Kenneth and Karolyn started a yard ornament business in Smithland and operated it for over 30 years before retiring.
His hobbies included hunting, traveling and visiting with his kids and grandkids.
Survivors include his wife, Karolyn "Kay" of Smithland; six children, daughter Carol and Dick Conley of Sioux City, son Calvin and Leslie Scheer of Bellevue, Neb., son Ron and Debbie Scheer of Gretna, Neb., daughter Nancy and Kim Ludtke of Albuquerque, N.M., son, Robert Painter and his friend Kim Svendsen of Hornick and daughter Sherry and Gary Cooksey of Camarillo, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, Michelle Conrad, Brian Conley, Corey Conley, Chad Scheer, Lee Ann Scheer, Travis Scheer and Troy Scheer, Brandon Fiala, Erin Uhl, Philip Cooksey, Daniel Cooksey, Jamie Cooksey, Nick Svendsen and Austin Svendsen; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Myrlan Scheer; and two sisters, De Ethel Bumann and Artis Scott.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leverne, Al and Ed Scheer; and two sisters, Joy Beck and Regina Dose.
