SIOUX CITY -- Kenneth E. Swanson, 76, of Sioux City died Monday, June 27, 2011, at Bickford Cottage Memory Care Center in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Zabel of First Covenant Church officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Kenneth was born Jan. 26, 1935, in Iona, Minn., the son of Nels E. and Montus (Peterson) Swanson. The family moved to Dakota City when Kenneth was a child. He was raised in Dakota City, where he attended high school. He moved to Sioux City around 1951.
He married Betty J. Owings on Jan. 30, 1953, in Sioux City. Betty died on Sept. 6, 1998, in Sioux City. Ken was employed as a truck driver for more than 30 years for Premier Trucking Co., who then became Midwest Consolidated Freight. He retired in 1994.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and yardwork. He was an avid flower gardener. He also enjoyed traveling and walking in the park up to six to seven miles a day. He was a lifetime member of the Teamsters Union. He also was a Third Degree Master Mason and a member of Omadi Lodge 5 of South Sioux City.
Kenneth is survived by a son, Bryan Swanson of Sioux City; a daughter, Linda Swanson and her friend, Carl Berndt, both of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Angelina Marko of Lebanon, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Sofia Marko and Nicholas Condos, both of Lebanon; two brothers, Charles "Chuck" Swanson and his wife, Dorothy of Dakota City, and Keith Swanson and his wife, Patty of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Shirley Menefee of Sugar Creek, Mo., and Carol Truchan of Hilo, Hawaii; several nieces and nephews; special neighbors, Katie and Russell Brown; two special lady friends, Carol Mulch and Betti Miller; and a special friend, Don Boggs.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Steve and Dean Swanson; and a sister, Beverly Hanson.
