Laurie Rene Thompson, 61, of Sioux City, died on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, surrounded by her family in Sioux City, after courageously fighting cancer for 18 months.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2039 So. St. Aubin, with the Rev. Jay Denne officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.christysmith.com .
Laurie was born Aug. 10, 1955, in Sioux City, to Ernest and Betty (Edwards) Lund. She attended Sioux City Public Schools and graduated from East High School in 1973. Laurie continued her education at Western Iowa Technical College.
She married Jeff Thompson on May 17, 1980, at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sioux City. The couple raised two boys, Zachary and Ian. Laurie worked for Renfro Tax & Bookkeeping and had a home-cleaning business in Sioux City.
Her hobbies included bicycling, taking long walks, gardening, camping, a great love of music, and doing yoga with her "Underground Yoga Group." She was a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Everyone that knew Laurie liked and loved her. She was a very loving, caring and giving person. Laurie was a wonderful, kind, devoted and protective mother to her children and was always there for her children and her husband, Jeff.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jeff Thompson; two sons, Ian Thompson and Zachary Thompson and friend, Lindsey Barreras; granddaughter, Brynn Thompson; her mother, Betty Johnson; seven brothers and sisters, Gary Lund and his wife, Peggy, Eric Lund, Cheri Donovan and her husband, Mike, Kathi Murphy and her husband, Mike, Doug Johnson and his wife, Karen, Denny Johnson and his wife, Kris and Diane Mead; her mother-in-law, Virginia Weaver; brother-in-law, Greg Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews; and other members of the Weaver family.
Laurie was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Lund; her second father, Wayne C. Johnson; brother, Don Johnson; sister-in-law, Gina Thompson; father in-law, Neal Edward Thompson; and her second father-in-law, Burt Weaver.
