Sioux City - LaVerne Elaine Brand, 84, of Sioux City died on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014 at a local nursing home.
Memorial Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3713 Green Ave. in Sioux City, with Elder Chad Cardwell officiating. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
LaVerne was born on April 24, 1929, in Pine County, Minn. She attended a country school in Pine County before moving to Minneapolis with her sisters to work at Woolworth's in downtown Minneapolis.
She met George Brand in Minneapolis, and they married on Dec. 14, 1946, in Sioux City. They were married for 57 years. LaVerne enjoyed working outside the home and taking care of people. She was a very active member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 75 years and loved teaching others about the Bible.
LaVerne loved spending time with her family, her dog, Marley, gardening, thrift shopping and especially loved to spend as much time as she could with her grandson. George died on July 16, 2003, in Sioux City.
She is survived by three children, Corey Brand and his wife, Melissa of Sioux City, Mike Brand of St. Louis, Mo., and Judith Cucuro of St. Louis, Mo.; her grandson, Elliott Brand and his wife, Maria of Sioux City; and three great-grandsons, Jackson, Colton and Landon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Wesley and Dennis Tate; and three sisters, Marjorie Sorensen, Merle Goddard and Pat Holler.
