Lawrence T. "Larry" Manning

SIOUX CITY -- Lawrence T. "Larry" Manning, 96, of Sioux City, formerly of Huntington Beach, Calif., died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the John Gerwulf Community Center, Sunrise Retirement Community. The Rev. Ryan Christenson of St. James United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial of the ashes will be in Westminster Memorial Park Cemetery, Westminster, Calif. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Larry was born Oct. 5, 1912, in Altomont, S.D., the son of H.E. and Zella (Griffith) Manning. He graduated from high school in Rosalie, Neb. He attended Wayne State College, where he played football and graduated in 1936.

On Aug. 16, 1938, he married Geraldine Wells. He served as superintendent of the Varina, Iowa, high school for two years. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943. He served as a platoon sergeant, stationed in the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and at the Battle of Bastone. He earned the American Campaign Medal, the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He served as a school administrator in California for many years. Geraldine died in 2001 in California.

He moved to Sioux City in 2007 and married Billie Hegstrom on April 21, 2007. They resided at Sunrise Retirement Community.

He is survived by his wife, Billie; and numerous nieces and nephews, who held a special place in his heart.
