SIOUX CITY -- Lawrence Leroy "Red" Bucy, 83, of Sioux City passed away June 26, 2011, at a local care facility.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Senstad and Zirpel officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Red was born Oct. 30, 1927, in Sioux City, to John Q. and Amanda H. (Crawford) Bucy. He grew up and attended South Sioux City Schools. He played football and pole vaulted for the South Sioux City Cardinals and graduated in 1946. Red served in the U.S. Army from March 1946 to April 29, 1947. He was stationed with the Motor Battalion, General Headquarters, Far East Command, Tokyo, Japan. He drove a 32-passenger diesel bus, transporting military and civilian personnel to places of duty within the city. He also drove tanks for the 2nd Armored Division.
He married Mary Lou Kamm on Jan. 8, 1949, in Elk Point, S.D. She passed away on Feb. 16, 1997, in Sioux City. He was employed with Ford Motor Company in Sioux City and later at Lincoln-Mercury. He also worked for Sieg Co. and then Motor Parts Central.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Red enjoyed football, especially Nebraska, watching NASCAR racing and fishing. He loved going mushroom hunting and entertaining everyone with his fireworks every July 4. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband and father. He and Mary Lou loved spending time with their kids and grandchildren most of all.
Survivors include his children, Suzanne Bucy, Kim and Keith Hawkins, Kit and Becky Bucy, Kelly and Debra Bucy, Lisa Bucy, and Mindy and Bill Byrne, all of Sioux City; four granddaughters; and four grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a brother, Gerald Bucy.
