Lee Baczwaski

Lee Baczwaski, 69, of Dakota City passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at a South Sioux City nursing home surrounded by his family.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Chaplin Ron Puetz will officiate. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Lee was born in South Saint Paul, Minn., the son of Larry and Glorialee (Danielson) Baczwaski. He was raised in South St. Paul and graduated from high school there in 1963. He came to Sioux City in his late teens. Lee served in the 185th Air National Guard in Sioux City and was called to active duty in 1968 and 1969, serving in Vietnam.
On Dec. 6, 1969, he married Carolyn Van Meter in Sioux City. Lee worked in the meat packing industry, starting with IBP on the floor and later becoming plant manager. During his career, he worked for the meat packing industry in several states and Canada including several years in Pasco, Wash., and nine years in Alberta, Canada. He also did consulting for the packing industry for several years. After he retired in 2009, he returned to Dakota City.
Lee loved hunting, fishing and he enjoyed the outdoors. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed going on several big games hunts for moose, elk, caribou, deer and antelope in Canada and the western United States.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Dakota City; a son, Michael (Krissy) of Kearney, Neb.; a daughter, Shelley (Bob) Maass of Wahoo, Neb.; five grandchildren, Jack and Leah Maass, and Max, Avalynn and Hadlee (who came into the world a few hours after her poppy departed) Baczwaski; two brothers, Bob (Patti) Baczwaski of Sioux City, and Tom (Rita) Baczwaski of Whiting, Iowa; a sister, Beth (Randy) Kalianoff of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Joy (Brent) Larsen of Sloan, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Joel Van Meter of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his black lab, Dakota, his constant companion for the past two years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Bill and Mona Van Meter; and a brother-in-law, Tim Van Meter.
A memorial has been established in his name for the Fisher House in Minneapolis, where they provided housing for families of ill veterans.
