Sioux City - Leon George Jacobsen, 88, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1212 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. Leon was born on May 4, 1925, in Irene, S.D., to Soren and Laura (Thompsen) Jacobsen. He grew up in Irene and attended school there. He worked for several area farmers before entering the U.S. Navy in 1945. After the Navy, he moved to Sioux City and went to work for the Wilson Trailer Company.
He married Dolores Heisterkamp on Nov. 27, 1954, in Sioux City.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, taking walks, yard work and watching dirt-track racing.
Survivors include two sons, Leon and Melanie Jacobsen Jr. of Sioux City, and Kirk and Jenni Jacobsen of South Sioux City; daughter, Vickie and Shane Haire of Sioux City; brother, Norm and Diane Jacobsen of Vermillion, S.D.; five grandchildren, the Rev. Christopher and Sarah Jacobsen of Wycoff, N.J., and their two children, Holland and Henry, Larissa Jacobsen of Des Moines, Kayla Jacobsen of Sioux City, Kyle Jacobsen and Kendal Jacobsen, both of Merrill, Iowa; and two stepgrandchildren, Michael Haire of Sioux City, and Barri Haire and fiancee, Rusty Martens of Pilger, Neb.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores; a son, Soren; three brothers, Clarence, Earl and Lawrence; and a sister, Jeanette.
