SIOUX CITY -- Leona M. Leff, 95, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at a local nursing home, with family and Hospice of Siouxland at her side.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Martha Anderson of Trimble United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Kennebec Cemetery at Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to

Leona was born on May 8, 1914, in Castana, Iowa, to James D. and Ella (Waples) Lyons Jr. She grew up and attended school and graduated from Castana High School. She married Allen W. Leff on Oct. 9, 1933, in Yankton. S.D. He passed away on March 31, 2006, in Sioux City. She moved with her husband to Sioux City in 1945 and had been a resident here ever since.
Leona was a member of Trimble United Methodist Church for 48 years. She enjoyed square dancing with her husband. She was the editor for the "Mike" (square dancing magazine) for 20 years. She was a member of the senior center for 27 years. She belonged to the bell choir at Northern Hills, enjoyed flowers, gardening and visiting with family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Roger and his wife, Benita Leff of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Kraig and Beth Leff of Sioux City, Kevin and Tammie Leff of Sioux City, and Karla and Brad Jalas of Granville, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lavonne Leff.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter, Barbara Lou Leff; and two brothers, Ralph and John Lyons.
