Leona M. Gibbs, 84, of Akron, died Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Akron Care Center following a short illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westfield (Iowa) Congregational UCC. Private family burial will be at a later date. Visitation with family present will be one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are with Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Leona was born Nov. 24, 1929, to Florence Price in Des Moines, while on a short visit there. She was the fifth of six children. She lived in Sioux City and the surrounding area all her life.
She married Lloyd Wilton Gibbs on Sept. 1, 1946, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived, worked and raised their family in Sioux City.
Leona was employed in several part-time positions, and at Zenith and IBP. She retired in her 70s.
Leona enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing with Lloyd, reading, embroidery, cooking and entertaining. Most of all, she enjoyed time spent with family and friends.
Leona considered Lloyd's family as her own and was seen in the same way by them. She and Lloyd were members of the Eagles for many years. She was well known for her laughter, being great fun to be with, and her generosity.
Survivors include her children, Patricia Davis of Tucson, Ariz., Barbara (Jim) Ross of Elk Point, Earl Gibbs of Tucson, and Lloyd (Kathy) Gibbs of Marysville, Wash.; grandchildren, Sheila (Michael) Davis Holbrook, Shari (Stacy) Davis Beeson, Teresa (Chad) Ross-Engle, James (Wendy) Ross Jr., Randy (Ayako) Gibbs, Cassandra (Doug) Gibbs Rader, Elizabeth Gibbs, Joshua Gibbs, Alexander Gibbs, Kristine Gibbs and Sean Gibbs; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; sister, Inez Clausen; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Voland and Viola Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Gibbs; her mother, Florence Price; brothers, Earl Price, Bill Price and Ed Brown; her in-laws, Orlando and Lou Gibbs, Ralph Gibbs, Silas Gibbs, Kenneth and Rose Gibbs, Marion Gibbs, Donald Gibbs, Arlo Gibbs, Leona and Ed Mason, "Swede" Williams, Cecil Johnson, Bill Voland and her husband's parents, Alva and Ida Gibbs; and some nieces and nephews.
