SIOUX CITY -- Leonard H. Uhl, 89, of Sioux City died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Leonard was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Hornick, Iowa, to Michael and Gertrude (Kuhn) Uhl. He grew up in the Hornick area and graduated from Luton High School in 1939. He worked at Swift and Company from 1940 to 1943. He then entered the U.S. Army, where he received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart medals during World War II. He was a tank commander during the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, he returned to Sioux City, where he married Elizabeth "Bette" Jauron on Oct. 9, 1946. She passed away on Jan. 25, 2011, in Sioux City. From 1946 to 1978, he was employed with the USDA as a meat grader. Following his retirement, he worked as a maintenance man for Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for 15 years.
Leonard was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He also was a member of AFGE Local 2584 and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed competitive trap shooting, hunting, puzzles, the outdoors, family events and sports, especially basketball. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two sons, Jauron Michael and Barbara Uhl of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Fred J. and Pam Uhl of Sioux City; a daughter, Jeanne M. and Kenneth Baldwin of Glendale, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, Tanya Fisher-Uhl and Jess Uhl of Cincinnati, Melissa Tiedtke, Jeff, Ryan, Emily, Molly and Ashley Uhl, all of Sioux City, and Chad and Dustin Baldwin of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward and Joanne Uhl of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Robert and Catherine Uhl of Long Beach, Calif.; and a sister, Jeanette Neely of California.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a grandson, Brady Uhl; his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
