Leonard O. Vanderlinden

SIOUX CITY -- Leonard O. Vanderlinden, 95, of Sioux City died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at a local nursing home.

Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Vanderlinden was cremated. There will be no viewing or visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

Mr. Vanderlinden was born on May 2, 1916 in Crofton, Neb., the son of Leonard L. and Celia (Purdue) Vanderlinden. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Central High School.

He married Lorraine E. Sigler on Jan. 21, 1936 in Elk Point, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1945, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed as a machinist at Wincharger and Albertson & Co. He then went to work at the Concrete Pipe Co. for 16 years, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the V.F.W. Post 1973 of Sioux City. In his younger years, he owned and operated midget racing cars. He enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Kenneth and Dee Vanderlinden and Gary and Roberta Vanderlinden, all of Sioux City; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one brother and his wife, Don and Lois Vanderlinden of Tulsa, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Dennis, Jerry, Duane and Robert Vanderlinden.
