LeRoy Richard Kleene

LeRoy R. Kleene, 80, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Holy Spirit Assisted Living in Sioux City.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Peace Reformed Church, 4100 Outer Drive, in Sioux City, with the Rev. Bob VanderSchaaf officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m., at Mornigside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. LeRoy was born on Thursday, June 11, 1936, to John and Jacoba (Jans) Kleene, in Sioux Center, Iowa. He grew up and attended school there, graduating in 1954.
LeRoy married Dorothy Miedema on Sept. 5, 1958. He entered into the U.S. Army in December 1958. While in the Army he was injured in Germany and spent 10 months recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He was transferred to the Army Reserves in March 1961. He returned home to Sioux Center with his wife and attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, and NBT in Sioux City, graduating in 1962. He was honorably discharged from the service in November 1964.
LeRoy and Dorothy moved to Sioux City and he worked for Commerce Printing and Stationary, later as a bookkeeper for both Irving Jensen and Herman M. Brown Construction companies. He retired in 1997 from Great West Casualty Insurance.
His hobbies included being an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan, Royals baseball fan and watching and attending his kids and grandkids sporting events as they grew up. He was a member of Peace Reformed Church and the Sioux City D.A.V.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Dorothy of Sioux City; six children, Pat and Dean Sheehan of Sioux City, Steve and Kristy Kleene of Sioux City, Geri Long of Omaha, DeAnne and Jim Wilson of Sioux Falls, S.D., LeAnne and Eric Quade of Kingsley, Iowa, and Dwight and Laura Kleene of Sergeant Bluff;, 11 grandchildren, Rachel and Brandon Weitzel and their children, Jaestin and Truman, Ryan and Katy Sheehan and their son, Patrick, Tyler and Calla Kleene and their children, Porter and Cooper, Alex and Tessa Kleene, Jamie Kleene, Trevor Wilson, Brooke Wilson, Nolan Quade, Sean Fitzgerald, Spencer Kleene and Tanner Kleene; two sisters, Jackie Smith and her husband, Ralph of St. Augustine, Fla., and Arlene Smit and her husband, Howard of Hull, Iowa; brother, Bob Kleene and his wife, Ileta of Charlotte, N.C.; brother-in-law, Wayne Marra of Orange City, Iowa; and five sisters-in-law, Carolyn Kleene of Max Meadows, Va., Shirley Kleene of Des Moines, Henrietta Ribbons of Sioux Center, Theresa Cleveringa of Sioux Center, and Frieda Beirma of Grand Rapids, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill and Gerald; sister, Betty Urban and her husband, John; sister, Mick Marra; sister-in-law, Ida Van Donge and her husband, Rich; and four brothers-in-law, Henry Miedema and his wife, Jeanette, Bill Beirma, Douglas Ribbons, and Nelson Cleveringa.
