Leslie Burton "Bud" Lewis

Leslie "Bud" Lewis, 65, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 6 p.m. today at Riverside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles Wolff officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Bud was born Oct. 21, 1942, in Miller, S.D., to Leslie and Elizabeth (Burton) Lewis. He attended and graduated from Lake Andes (S.D.) High School with the class of 1960. After high school, he attended Huron College, graduating in 1965. He received his master of arts degree from Morningside College in 1999.

In 1962, he and Roberta McEntaffer were married. To that union two children were born, Garie and Bonnie. On Sept. 16, 1990, he and Nancy Sanford were married in Sioux City.

He worked with children with behavior disorders. He worked with a countless number of youths in his career through teaching and counseling children at risk. He taught school in Rock Rapids, Iowa, from 1969 to 1981 and various schools and reservations in South Dakota. They moved to Siouxland in 1981. He was a counselor at the Boys and Girls Home from 1993 to 1999, Woodbury County Alternative Education Program from 1999 to 2004, UMO HO Nation Public School in Macy, Neb. from 2004 to 2006, retiring due to health issues.

He belonged to the Omaha Nation Education Association, Nebraska Teacher's Association, the National Education Association, Woodbury County Democratic committee and Disproportionate Minority Youth Incarnated.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Sioux City; his mother, Elizabeth Lewis of Yankton, S.D.; a son, Garie Lewis of Sioux City; daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Matt Sandvold of Brandon, S.D., Traci and Shawn Winter of Sioux City and Kelli Sanford of Sergeant Bluff; sisters and their husbands, Linda and John Sheeran of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Cindy and Richard Metteer of Yankton, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Kelsey and Alex Sandvold, Thomas Lewis, Tanner Sanford, Aubree Schwartz and Allison and Olivia Winter; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie; and brothers, William and Robert.
