Lester Eric Lundahl

Lester Eric Lundahl, 99, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles Wolff officiating. Private family graveside services will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Lester was born June 3, 1908, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Swan and Mary (Cedarquist) Lundahl. His twin sister, Irene, was with the family just a short time and passed away in 1910. His family moved to a farm near Wakefield, Neb., in 1913, coming by immigrant train with all their personal belongings and all the livestock. The family joined Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield.

He married Helen Baumgart on June 1, 1929. They farmed and managed a produce business in the area until 1937, when they moved to Sioux City. He worked at the Jewel Tea Company and Prudential Insurance Co. until he joined the U.S. Army during World War II. His company was the 911 Lightning Division Infantry, serving in Germany and France. He was part of several bridge head battles. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, EME Campaign Medal and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He was a real estate broker and land developer. His wife, Helen, passed away in 1993. He later married Margaret Krause.

He was a member of Riverside Lutheran Church for 50 years, where he sang in the choir and was church treasurer for 27 years. He was very instrumental in the formation and building of the current church site and building. He was a member of the American Legion, Morningside Masonic Lodge 615 A.F. & A.M., a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Bodies, Eastern Star, Sioux City Art Center and the Sioux City Concert Course.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Lois and Earl Dennler of St. Louis, Mo., and Marlene and Paul VanderWiel of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Nan Lundahl of Tyler, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen; two sons, Gene and Robert; his twin sister, Irene; three other sisters, Freida, Julia and Mabel; and three brothers, Clarence, Carl and Ernest.
