SIOUX CITY -- Letha P. Newman, 94, of Sioux City passed away May 31, 2010, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jon Moravec officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery, Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to christysmith.com.
Letha was born June 16, 1915, in Pisgah, Iowa, to Richard and Fern (Carpenter) Harris. She attended school in Monona County. She resided the majority of her life in Monona and Woodbury Counties.
She married Fred A. Newman on July 12, 1947, in Sioux City. He passed away April 30, 1981, in Sioux City.
She was a musician for many years. She was a member of the Junes All Girls Orchestra and played in a band with her father. She was also employed at Wincharger and was a homemaker. She was co-owner of Tommy T's nightclub in Yankton, S.D., from 1963 to 1970. She later returned to Sioux City and worked at the County Home until her retirement.
She enjoyed crocheting, watching her soaps, traveling and conversations with family and friends. She never drove, so she enjoyed it thoroughly when friends and family picked her up and went out to eat.
Survivors include a daughter, Diane Zeglin of Sheridan, Wyo.; a son, Larry and Carmen Newman of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Connie and Carolyn Harris of Goodyear, Ariz.; a son, Gary Newman and Judy Klich of Cascade, Idaho; a daughter-in-law, Rita Newman of Davenport, Iowa; a son, Keith and Rose Newman of Lawton, Iowa; a daughter, Kathy Moravec of Sioux City; a daughter, Ginger Newman of Sioux City; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Neal Harris of Sioux City, Dick Harris of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Gene Harris of Sioux City; and a sister, Greta Kroll of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Nita Edlund and Itha Hammond; and a brother, Gale Harris.
